About the Studio Arts Thread

The First-Year Arts Program offers many opportunities in the Studio Arts, that can include figure drawing, painting, mixed media sculpture, ceramics, graphic design and multi-media installation. The thread is specifically designed so that FAPpers of all experience levels can delve into every aspect of Visual Arts offered. Resident artist Julia Rooney offers a program-wide Masterclass. Workshops, led by a variety of guest artists, give FAPpers the chance to hone their skills in their area of visual arts or try their hand at a completely new medium. We also offer an Info Session about involvement opportunities on campus and a Keynote Panel of industry professionals.

Resident Artist: Julia Rooney

Julia Rooney is a visual artist and arts educator. Though rooted in painting, her practice often bridges other disciplines, including writing and collaborative, community-based projects. Since 2011, she has been using the U.S. Postal Service as a medium for the production, distribution and exhibition of visual and text-based work.

Rooney holds an MFA in Painting/Printmaking from the Yale School of Art and a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard College. She has exhibited her work with Kopeikin Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Diane Rosenstein Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Zeit Contemporary Art (New York, NY), The Painting Center (New York, NY), and ChaShaMa (Brooklyn, NY), amidst others. In 2019, she was an artist-in-residence through LMCC’s SU-CASA program, and previously has had teaching fellowships/partnerships through the Yale Prison Education Initiative, The Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University, Yale University Art Gallery, More Art/Engaging Artists and The Joan Mitchell Foundation. From 2011-2016, she worked in the Department of Islamic Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, helping organize public programs, including a live music series in the Moroccan Court. She is also trained as a Legacy Specialist through the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Creating a Living Legacy (CALL) program, which focuses on archiving a senior artist’s lifetime of work through one-on-one collaboration in the artist's studio.

In the coming year, Rooney will do residencies at Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts (Saratoga, WY), the Joan Mitchell Center (New Orleans, LA) and MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA), followed by a solo exhibition in North Adams, MA.
